If you were to survey 100 Christians, probably half of them would say that the Book of Psalms is their favourite book of the Bible.
The reason so many people feel this way is that the Psalms present the deepest, most profound, penetrating, and insightful portions of all the Word of God. The Psalms are poetry - Divine poetry! The Psalms are art - Divine art - touching the soul.
The Psalms speak to the heart about the struggles, aspiration, trials, rewards, and duties of the Christian man or woman. "The Psalms are the perfect image of the soul's inner life.
They offer therapy and correction for every human emotion." (Athanasius)
There is literally a Psalm for every season of life.
Are you anxious or afraid?
Are you confused about the future?
Has the condition of this wicked world got you down?
Have you been disappointed recently?
Devastated?
Are you on the verge of a major change in your life?
The Psalms speak to all of these situations.
In fact, there isn’t a single emotion or a single experience you can have that the Psalm will fail to address!
How is that even possible, you ask?
The secret is this: the Psalms are God's Hymnbook for His People.
For over a thousand years before Christ, the Psalms have been a collection of inspired (God-breathed) prayers and poems and prophecies and laments and historical recollections enabling the people of God to focus on Him.
